LRFC 1st XV Match Report v Pinley – Home 8th Dec 2018
Ledbury 6 Pinley 17
Ex Ledbury, Gloucester and England player, Richard West, was the very special guest speaker on the occasion of a record breaking, Marstons sponsored, 200 plus VP lunch at LRFC last Saturday. Following an early Christmas lunch, a replete throng packed the touchline to watch the home side take on Pinley.
Playing with the benefit of the slope and a powerful wind behind them, Ledbury, placed 5th in the league, faced 2nd placed Pinley. From the outset it was clear that the visitors would attempt to dominate physically, but Ledbury drew first blood with a long range penalty from Bennion. Ledbury increased their lead with another Bennion penalty and things looked promising. Pinley however quickly responded when centre Harry Max barged over for an unconverted try.
The Pinley pack was dominant in the set piece throughout and Max scored again when he found a gap in the Ledbury defence for a converted try. The windy conditions meant close passing was required – which Ledbury failed to realise and the bigger visitors dominated most areas of the game, stifling any Ledbury attacks with some great tackling.
Ledbury defended heroically, but their line outs were weak in the strong blustery wind and, from a missed throw, Sam Nicholls was about to crash over after some great close passing between the Pinley forwards. In the last quarter the game opened up and we saw more of the old Pinley game, with numerous off the ball incidents. Ledbury however continued to press, but were denied a late try due to poor passing not helped by the high wind.
Next Saturday sees the final league match pre-Christmas against 9th placed Stoke Old Boys and Ledbury now lying 5th. With a coach laid on for eager supporters please check with the club for details.
