Ledbury RFC 1st XV v Alcester RFC 1st XV 19th January 2019
Ledbury 27 Alcester 8
On Saturday we welcomed Alcester RFC 1st XV at home. Although the weather was grey and miserable, supporters from both teams joined to support the boys.
Alcester made it clear from the outset that they were going to give Ledbury a good match, when Max Biltcliffe struck a 40 metre penalty within minutes. George Bennion responded shortly with his own 40 metre penalty, but it was looking ominous for Ledbury as the visitors pack then pummelled the try line for ages- great tackling from Johnny Whitting in particular kept Alcester at bay, but the Alcester scrummage was worryingly efficient.
Despite their dominance up front, Alcester could not stop Ledbury gaining ground and a beautiful chip kick from fly-half Rayfield was safely gathered by veteran wing Stokes for a converted try. Ledbury scored from the resulting kick off, Hallett outstripping the Alcester defence after a 70 metre run to score under the posts, which Bennion converted. The conditions were not ideal for running rugby and Ledbury should have been out of sight by half time but for inaccurate and poor handling. Bennion put the home side into a commanding 20-3 lead at half time with another penalty.
Gloomy conditions in the second half saw the game deteriorate into an arm wrestle – the Ledbury pack was struggling with the powerful Alcester scrummage- a pushover try was their reward. Alcester continued to dominate play, but great tackling from Ledbury kept them out. Just when Alcester were hoping to turn the game at 20-8, a counter attack was started when turn over ball came the way of the Ledbury backs where the ball was quickly shipped to Hallett on Ledbury’s 5 meter line, who found Whitting and ultimately Rayfield who scored under the posts, Bennion converted. That score settled the match and despite Alcester’s great efforts in the last ten minutes, they were again denied by resolute Ledbury defence.
