Ledbury 1st XV v Coventry Welsh

Ledbury 1st XV 17 – Coventry Welsh 7

Ledbury faced a regenerated Coventry Welsh, who had enjoyed a good run of results recently. The visitors had the benefit of the slope and a stiff breeze in the first half, a much changed Ledbury pack were on the back foot immediately, when Coventry Welsh scrambled over for a converted try in the first five minutes.
Accurate kicking kept Ledbury pinned in their own half and it was only stout defence that kept the well drilled visitors from scoring. Bennion opened the Ledbury account with a well struck penalty early in the second half. Coventry Welsh had an accurate kick off from the restart forcing a Ledbury knock on, but against the run of play, Ledbury’s scrum drove the opposition back yards and Rayfield scythed through the Coventry Welsh backs finding Aaron James who scored in the corner, which Bennion converted.
From the restart, quick hands saw Matt Hallett bursting through tackles from his own 22 to put Ledbury clear with a converted try. Ledbury continued to threaten, but were unable to extend their lead. The last 10 minutes saw frantic efforts by Coventry Welsh to get back in contention. A late penalty from Rayfield gained Ledbury 60 metres territory and from the ensuing play, James Seager was unlucky not to have been awarded a try at the death. Another good win for Ledbury, in the face of determined opposition.
The VP lunch prior to the match was attended by approximately 100 people, guest speaker John Wilesmith gave an interesting account of his playing days at Ledbury RFC along with the story of the Heroes Collection – hand painted rugby players from all over the world.
